Understanding Incoterms® 2020
International trade can be complex, with buyers and sellers often located in different countries, using different shipping methods, and following different rules. To make trade simpler and avoid confusion, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) created Incoterms® (International Commercial Terms). These are globally accepted rules that clearly define the responsibilities of both buyers and sellers in moving goods. In simple terms, Incoterms® decide who pays for what, who arranges transport, who handles insurance, and when the risk transfers from seller to buyer. By agreeing to a specific Incoterm, both parties save time and avoid lengthy negotiations.
Types of Incoterms® 2020
Incoterms® 2020 are divided into two groups:
- For Any Mode of Transport (7 terms):
EXW (Ex Works), FCA (Free Carrier), CPT (Carriage Paid To), CIP (Carriage & Insurance Paid To), DAP (Delivered at Place), DPU (Delivered at Place Unloaded), DDP (Delivered Duty Paid).
- For Sea & Inland Waterways (4 terms):
FAS (Free Alongside Ship), FOB (Free On Board), CFR (Cost & Freight), CIF (Cost, Insurance & Freight).
